The family Von Wouvern apparently had its early beginnings in a town named Wouw (not Wow).

The name literally means from WouW. This town was located three miles north of Antwerp, Belgium.

The family, according to early records had heavy responsibilities in both church and war departments in Brabant, which is the central district in the lowlands of Belgium.

This was a rich agricultural district.

As far as we can learn the root of the family tree rests in Carl Nicolas Von Wouwern.

Joost von Wowern, in the King of Spains Highest Order was Master of Malois, Artzelar, Hieselar, Qvarbeck and Strabrack, Presiding General of the Defense Council at the Royal Court in Brussels, Regis catholici Legat (Head of the Catholic Legal System), Knight of the Holy Order of the Cross in Jerusalem, knowledgeable in many languages, died 26 May 1567 and buried in Antwerpen in a Derder Cloister (Desdori) in a bricked in vault under a copper plate; he was very Catholic minded and has donated much to the poor peoples support.

He was married to Anna de Ratzans, (Fru von Machaden de Sempach;) she was buried in the same place with her husband in the cloister Desdori?s ?Chor?; she loved the Catholic religion very much and has given much to churches, schools and hospitals as well as to the poor.
